Scholarship Fund
The East Greenwich Rotary Scholarship Fund has announced its annual awards
program of scholarships for students graduating from East Greenwich high schools.
This year the Scholarship Fund will present $16,500 in awards to East Greenwich
High School graduating seniors and a $1,000 award to a senior graduating from Rocky
Hill School.
The following awards will be presented at the East Greenwich High School awards night in May:
(2) EAST GREENWICH ROTARY Scholarships [$5,000 each]
Award payable $1,250 per year in each of four years.
(1) East Greenwich Rotary PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT Scholarship [$2,000]
Award payable $1,000 per year in each of two years.
(1) East Greenwich Rotary COMMUNITY SERVICE Scholarship [$1,000]
Award payable $500 per year in each of two years.
(1) Walter G. Barney COMMUNITY SERVICE Scholarship [$500]
One time payment of $500.
(1) Arthur P. Silverman COMMUNITY SERVICE Scholarship [$500]
One time payment of $500.
(1) Howard D. Silverman COMMUNITY SERVICE Scholarship [$500]
One time payment of $500.
(1) Irving A. Silverman COMMUNITY SERVICE Scholarship [$1,000]
One time payment of $1,000
(1) Barbara M. Tufts Scholarship [$2,000]
Award payable $1,000 per year in each of two years.
(1) Charles & Beatrice Keyes Scholarship [$500]
One time Annual Award of $500.
(1) Rocky Hill School - East Greenwich Rotary Scholarship [$500]
One time Annual Award of $1,000.
Selection Process
There is no application process for these awards. Students wishing to be considered
should contact their guidance counselors.
Recipients at East Greenwich High School are selected by the school Awards
Committee according to the following criteria:
EAST GREENWICH ROTARY Scholarships
These awards are presented to students pursuing a regular four-year college
degree course of study. Recipients are selected on the basis of:
- High academic achievement
- Leadership qualities and performance
- Service to others
- High standards of personal character
PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT Scholarship
This award is presented to a student deserving of recognition for his or her
noteworthy achievement. It is not restricted to students pursuing a four-year
course of study, but may be awarded to an individual pursuing advanced
technology studies or other appropriate further education.
COMMUNITY SERVICE Scholarships
Recipients of both the Walter G. Barney Community Service Scholarship and the
Irving A. Silverman Community Service Scholarship are selected on the basis of
outstanding community service.
Similarly, the recipient of the East Greenwich Rotary Community Service
Scholarship must have demonstrated outstanding community service, and also
have been an active contributing member of the Interact club.
Barbara M. Tufts Scholarship
This award is endowed by the Rotary Club of East Greenwich as a tribute to
Barbara M. Tufts, who was serving as president of the Club at the time of her
death. It is presented to a well-rounded student who exemplifies the values
and interests that were important to Barbara during her lifetime.
- Barbara Tufts was an active contributor to the causes in which she believed, such as the East Greenwich Cooperative Nursery School and Youth Night.
- Barbara was an avid sports fan, and believed in the value of athletic activity in her personal life.
- She had varied interests, and believed in exercising her talents and leadership through multi-faceted activities involving education, the arts, and town government.
The student selected to receive the Barbara M. Tufts Scholarship will have
demonstrated a zest for life and dedication to a variety of worthy activities
and endeavors, with a willingness to be actively involved as a significant
contributor.
Charles & Beatrice Keyes Scholarship
Charles - Avid Rotarian
- Charles Keyes was former District Governor
- Charles Keyes was on the Zoning Board - Tour of East Greenwich
- Heavily involved in the First Baptist Church
Beatrice - Nurse for 35 years
- Teacher
- Held many offices in church
- Involved in International Sunshine Society (ISS)
The student selected to receive the Charles & Beatrice Keyes Scholarship will have
demonstrated a dedication to community service and aspiring to a nursing or teaching career.
Rocky Hill School - East Greenwich Rotary Scholarship
The school selects the recipient, who must be a current resident of the "greater
East Greenwich community", and a graduating senior pursuing a regular four year
college degree course of study. The selection is based on:
- High academic achievement
- Leadership qualities and performance
- Service to others
- High standards of personal character
NOTE: FINANCIAL NEED is also given serious consideration in selection of all Rotary scholarship recipients.
The Record
Since its founding in December 1984, the East Greenwich Rotary Scholarship
Fund has awarded $900,000 in scholarships to deserving East Greenwich students.
This has been made possible by individual contributions and community support of
Rotary Club fundraising events. We are proud of our many accomplished recipients
and grateful to the community for helping us to recognize their exemplary
achievement.
How You Can Help
Contributions from the public are welcome, and can be made payable to the
East Greenwich Rotary Scholarship Fund, PO Box 222, East Greenwich, RI 02818-0222.
The Fund is a Rhode Island NON-PROFIT corporation and is eligible for
exemption from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code.
